The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics came to an end on Sunday after a 17-day run.

The games wrapped up with a closing ceremony held at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo under the theme “Worlds We Share.”

South Korea’s flag bearer for the ceremony was Jun Woong-tae, who grabbed the nation’s first ever medal in the modern pentathlon earlier on Saturday, winning bronze.

Team Korea ranked 16th in the overall medal tally after winning a total of 20 medals, including six gold, four silver and ten bronze medals.

In particular, South Korea picked up four out of five gold medals up for grabs in archery, while also taking gold in fencing for men’s team sabre and another in gymnastics for men’s vault.

There were several athletes who touched the hearts of the Korean people though they failed to win any medals, including Woo Sang-hyeok who set a new Korean record after finishing fourth in the men's high jump.

Diver Woo Ha-ram also moved many after finishing fourth in the final of the three-meter springboard, the best-ever result Korea earned in the event.

Swimming sensation Hwang Sun-woo finished fifth in the finals of the men's 100-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics, recording the best performance for an Asian swimmer in 69 years.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will kick off on August 24 and run through September 5.

The next Summer Olympics will be held in Paris in 2024.
