Moon Meets Opposition Party Leaders, Asks for Cooperation

President Moon Jae-in met with the leaders of the nation’s four opposition parties on his first day on the job on Wednesday.

Moon first visited the headquarters of the conservative Liberty Korea Party(LKP) in Yeouido, Seoul and met with the party’s floor leader, Chung Woo-taik.

Moon called on the LKP to work together with the government for the sake of the nation now that the elections, where heated competition took place, are over.

Moon said he believes that if the LKP provides cooperation, the government will be able to smoothly tackle issues regarding inter-Korean relations, national security and the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

Moon then headed to the National Assembly to meet with People’s Party leader Park Jie-won. He asked for the party’s cooperation, saying that though he and Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party fiercely competed for a change in power, he, Ahn and their parties all share the same goal.

During his meeting with Bareun Party Floor Leader Joo Ho-young, the new president asked for cooperation in legislating laws on areas that they see eye-to-eye on first for the sake of resolving economic and security crisis.

Lastly, Moon met with Justice Party leader Roh Hoe-chan and said he shares many of the values of the Justice Party. He vowed to carry out state affairs with an attitude capable of gathering bipartisan support.
