South Korea hosted the 23rd Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Gangneung and Jungsun in Gangwon Province from February ninth to 25th.

It was the second Olympic Games that South Korea hosed since the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.

The PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games were described as “Peace Olympics” as they saw the participation of North Korea and provided a respite from months of standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

There had been growing concerns up until the opening ceremony on whether the PyeongChang games would be a success as some countries had considered not taking part, expressing woes about tensions on the Korean Peninsula resulting from the North’s nuclear issue.

But the two Koreas successfully managed to engage in dialogue and the winter games came to see the North’s participation. In particular, inter-Korean athletes marched under the flag of a unified Korean Peninsula during the opening ceremony for the first time in eleven years and an inter-Korean unified team in women’s ice hockey, a first in Olympic history, was created.



Over two-thousand-920 athletes from 92 countries took part in the PyeongChang Games. That’s the largest scale yet in both the number of participating athletes and countries for a winter Olympics.

Team Korea garnered a record of 17 medals in the Winter Games, including five gold, eight silver and four bronze medals to finish seventh in the overall medal tally.

South Korea also reaped a surplus of nearly 62 billion won through the games, overcoming fears that hosting the Olympics would bring about a deficit.
