The Strange Medicine

The Strange Medicine
Once upon a time, there lived a famous doctor. He was able to treat any patients with his medicines or acupuncture, no matter how sick the patients were. There were rumors that the skilled doctor could even bring a dead person back to life and help older people recapture their lost youth with his unique medicine. The rumors turned out to be true; the physician did possess a miracle cure. But the amount of the medicine was extremely small, since it was made from very rare herbs. So the doctor did not use the precious medicine for just anyone, and he hid it in a secret place.

One day, the doctor himself got a serious illness. It was a fatal disease and he knew his days were numbered. He called in one of his students and showed the medicine he had kept hidden for years. The doctor asked the student, whom he trusted deeply, to apply the medicine to his body little by little after he died. Before long, the doctor passed away.

As instructed, the student began to put the mysterious medicine on his teacher’s feet. Miraculously, the body of the dead person began to warm gradually by the time the medicine was applied to his thigh. The student was amazed. He realized that it was indeed a miracle drug to revive a person. Suddenly, it came to him that his teacher had never taught him how to make the medicine. He wondered what he could do after his own death. A wild idea occurred to him. He abruptly stopped applying the medicine. The doctor’s body, which had been warming up, became cold again. Sadly, the doctor never came back to life and died. The student kept the remaining medicine for himself.

As time passed, the student became old and got a deadly disease. He knew that he wouldn’t live long, so he called in his son. Just as his teacher did a long time ago, he showed the strange medicine to his son and asked him to apply it to his body after he died. When the man died, the son began to spread the medicine over the body of his father. As expected, the body began to warm slowly, with the heart beating again. But, there wasn’t enough medicine left.

The deceased doctor only left a small dose of medicine for one person all those years ago. The student had already used half of the medicine for his teacher, and the remaining amount was not enough to raise him from the dead. Just like his teacher, the student’s body became cold again and he soon died.

If the student had faithfully followed his teacher’s instructions to revive him, the teacher may have shared the recipe for the medicine. Then, the two people would have lived longer. Even though the doctor had the miracle cure, he and his student couldn’t benefit from it because of the student’s greed.
