The Man Who Can’t Get Hitched

2011-03-28

When we fill out various types of forms, we’re asked to provide personal information, like age, gender, a cell phone number and address. Among the personal details is whether you’re married or single. People may wonder how much influence their marital status could have on purchasing goods or joining a club, but in any case, society wants to know whether they are married or not. People constantly face a choice of whether to marry until they finally tie the knot, regardless of age. There are people who are already married, who are going to get married, who badly want to walk down the aisle, those who have been married but are no longer, those who do not want to get married at all, and those who can’t get hitched. And there are people who claim they choose to stay single but in fact, they can’t get married for some reason. The romantic comedy “The Man Who Can’t Get Hitched” depicts a man of the last type and three women surrounding this eccentric bachelor in a hilarious way.

Here’s a 40-year-man architect who is handsome, tall and competent. On the surface, he is a single man every woman would want to marry. But in reality, no women do. Why? Because he is too old? No. The stubborn man dwells in his own world and totally lacks social skills. He blasts classical music in his apartment. He cooks meat all by himself at a table for six at a restaurant full of people, not feeling guilty at all. He is happy to eat the meat, while many people are standing in line outside, waiting to get in the restaurant. He sets the table and prepares good wine on the rooftop of a building to enjoy a spectacular display of fireworks all alone. These scenes illustrate that this single man likes to be alone and pursues his own pleasure and delight. Things begin to twist when he has to have his pants pulled off in front of a female doctor and receive a rectal exam from her. Despite the humiliating experience, he comes to repeatedly visit the doctor who examined him. The two are attracted to each other, but they just don’t know how to express their feelings. The mother of the pathetic bachelor plots with the father of the doctor to make the couple man and wife. After many twists and turns, the man, who had sought a perfect life of his own, eventually realizes how much she means to him and designs a beautiful house where they will live together.

In performing the role of the arrogant architect in this soap opera, actor Ji Jin-hee shed his previous image of a handsome, serious guy and successfully demonstrated his comic talent. His extraordinary yet cute style worked well in the comical and happy love story, harmonizing with singer-and-actress Uhm Jung-hwa’s impressive portrayal of the Bridget Jones-type woman with a medical degree. “The Man Who Can’t Get Hitched” is a spin-off of the popular Japanese drama with the same title that was broadcast on Fuji TV in 2006.
