My Sassy Girl

2012-09-08

BG: Intro - 김형석

Directed by Gwak Jae-young

Arguably, the greatest romantic movie
in Korean history, in my opinion.

The movie helped propel the leading actors' careers.
Cha Tae-hyeon and Jeon Ji-hyeon.

It is also the first few Korean films
to be re-made in Hollywood.

Also, the film was based on an internet novel
that helped Kim Ho-seok a very popular name,

with many other online novelists like Gwiyeoni
released numerous works that got turned into films.

To give you a jist of how good this movie is,
think about the movie Serendipity, and its tag line.

When love feels like magic, it's called destiny.
When destiny has a sense of humor, it's called serendipity.

The story is of course, like any other romance movie,
is about a boy and a girl.

He notices her and is smitten right away,
but she is extremely drunk, throws up and faints in the train.

Passengers somehow got he idea that the two are a couple,
and he is forced to carry her out of the train.

And from that point on, their topsy-turvey relationship begins.

Song Break: 사랑느낌 - 조규찬

Frustrated with little option to do but to dump her somewhere,
he checks into a motel.

No dark motives by the young man,
as you will discover that he is as noble as he is easily bullied by the girl.

BG: Love & Longing - 김형석

Unfortunately, she uses the situation to her advantage.

Forcing him into dates.

He tries to humor her by playing by her rules.

And in the process he learns that there's something about her,

beneath her wacky dictatorship.

Strangely, when the two actually reach a point
where they feel their relationship might be blossoming into something good,

both mutually agree to call it quits.

But before that they take one last trip.

They write and bury personal love letters,
promising to meet back at that place a year later.

Before they part, she overhears him
giving tips to a potential new suitor for her.

A list of simple tips on what
he can expect from her,
what he must tolerate,
and what he can do to keep her happy.

Learning that no man understood her like he did,
she is deeply touched, and of course find it difficult to end the relationship.

A year passes...
and although she doesn't show up,
he is at that promised spot,
he reads her letter, and this is another emotional climax in the movie.

Can't and won't give away the ending,
so watch it to really enjoy this magical piece.
