Rules of Dating

2013-03-09

연예의 목적(2005)

Starring Park Hae-il and Kang Hye-jeong
The directorial debut of filmmaker Han Jae-rim.

There have been plenty of movies
about love in the past.

Mostly they leave a warm, fuzzy feeling inside
after you've watched them.

And they usually end on a high note.

Two people falling in love
in a beautiful romance.

Making you feel that could be you.
Sometimes giving you hope, or false hope
that it could happen to you.

And when it comes to Korean soap operas
and movies that deal with the subject of
love... too many of them are all too one-sided.

Some say you need to give people hope
by at least making sure there is a happy ending.

And that's when this amazing work by
a first time director comes along.

It's not pretty.
It has many scenes that leave you
feeling disgusted.

But hey, we use the term
crazy in love for a good reason.

Song Break: Naughty Girl - 린

Park plays a high school teacher.
Kang plays a high school teacher.
But Park is a seasoned one,
while Kang is a fresh, young teacher in Park's school.

Park's character is instantly smitten by Kang.

And he is not shy about using the direct approach,
regardless of how Kang may feel about him.

He stubbornly believes she will feel the same way.

Kang feels like she's walking on egg shells.
First, she has a boyfriend.
And she has many personal problems.
She suffers from insomnia, troubled
by some traumatic incidents of the past,
involving a crush she had on the wrong guy.

Ergo, she is overly defensive,
and unsure of what she wants.

Park's character, as selfish,
ruthless and crazy as he may seem,
may be just what the doctor ordered
in terms of helping Kang get better
and find herself.

But the process is nothing but smooth.
Especially when both are already involved
in a relationship.

The movie defies the age-old concept
about two singles finding true love.

They do learn about love,
but through an unfortunate, and untimely encounter,
with each other,
and by pushing each other to discomfort,
and by hurting each other.

This is an amazing movie
once you look past some of the craziness involved.

It has something different to offer everyone.
But only if you've been in relationships,
been in love, or thought you were in love,
and most importantly, if you failed.
