A Werewolf Boy

2012-11-10

Man in the Mirror - 존박
철부지 - 존박
나의 왕자님 - 박보영
자유시대- 박보영

Directed by Jo Sung-hee
Starring Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-yeong

It has topped the advanced tickets charts
on its opening weekend at 35.9 percent.

Beating out latest Bond movie Skyfall,
falling closely behind at 35.8 percent.

A love story between a girl and a werewolf.

The two have something in common.

Both have shut themselves away from the world.
The girl, is too physically fragile,
complete with asthma and various ailments.
She is home-schooled, as going to school might put her
health in jeopardy.

The stories spans half a century.

Park's character
moves to a peaceful village.

There she meets a boy who
can't talk, and behaves more like a canine than man.

Although she can't stand him,
she learns ways to train him
to behave... and obey her command.

Along the way, they form a beautiful friendship.

But the boy turns into a violent beast,
when he is angered.

And his past quickly catches up to him.

This complicates the young girl's life
and it turns out they may not have
much time to be with each other.

The film tackles a theme of the blockage in communication
with the rest of the world
and what happens when two people
like that come together.

The best way to describe the movie
is that it's like a classic Disney cartoon or film.

It features fairy-tale cut-outs in the form of
Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-yeong.

The story is warm, and almost completely appropriate
for young viewers.

The scenery, and everything is visually warm, fuzzy and nice.

Unfortunately, it works the opposite way as well.

No classic Disney product will please
today's audience.

It seems very out of date.

The characters are too one-dimensional.

Good acting by both the lead stars
with very limited elements and tools they are offered.

But the main villain in the story
is simply too over-the-top.
There is no way to justify many
of his behaviors, action and how he came to be that way.

From the very start of the movie,
you can tell what will come next,
and pray that the director and the writers have
something more than scenes, moments and plots
that have been done to death before.

I would recommend it to children
and teenagers who can't get enough of
predictable love stories.

I did notice some grown-up ladies
sobbing away at the end.

There are many little, subtle touching moments throughout the film.

But I'm certain the reason for their response
is good acting by the ridiculously good looking Song Joong-ki.

This movie is living proof that
regardless of the quality of the movie,
Song can sell tickets.
