3.1 Magnitude Earthquake Occurs near Heuksan Island

An earthquake with a magnitude of three-point-one occurred in waters off a southwestern island in South Jeolla Province on Friday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the earthquake was reported at 6:03 a.m. in waters 92 kilometers southeast of Heuksan Island, with an epicenter estimated at 25 kilometers.

The weather agency said it does not believe the latest quake caused any damage.

With Friday’s tremor, the country has now experienced 51 earthquakes measuring over two on the Richter scale and eight with a magnitude of three or higher this year.
