A sightseeing gondola lift will be built on the central mountain of Namsan in Seoul by 2025 in a bid to increase accessibility and convenience.

According to the city government on Monday, the gondola system will be constructed in between Yejang Park near Myeongdong Station on Subway Line Four and the top of the mountain, which attracts eight million visitors every year.

The system will run with 25 ten-seater gondolas capable of transporting more than one-thousand people per hour.

The city government provided reassurance that there would be no damage to the environment and proceeds from the system will be used to promote ecological preservation projects on the mountain.

A private company has been operating a cable car over Namsan since 1962 but problems with low accessibility and aging facilities have frequently been raised.
