The South Korean Navy said that a U.S. Aegis combat system-equipped destroyer arrived at a naval base on Jeju Island on Tuesday to replenish supplies.

The Navy said that the USS Higgins Arleigh Burke-class destroyer entered the base to stock up on necessary items and to allow crew members to rest.

The destroyer is equipped with Tomahawk ship-to-surface cruise missiles.

The arrival of the warship comes a day after Korea and the U.S. kicked off their annual combined Freedom Shield military exercises.

A Navy official said that the arrival is unrelated to the exercises and there are no plans for the vessel to take part in the joint drills.

However, the two sides do plan to hold friendly exchange activities on the occasion of the U.S. warship’s visit to Jeju.
