President Yoon Suk Yeol said South Korea, the United States and Japan will continue to engage in trilateral cooperation after the incoming Donald Trump administration takes power in Washington.
At a press conference Thursday, Yoon said he spoke to Trump on the phone the morning after his reelection victory.
Yoon said the three countries established solid business cooperation during Trump’s first term in office, leading to trilateral economic and security cooperation, as well as shared global leadership.
He said Trump was shocked to learn of North Korea’s recent provocations, including its trash balloon campaign, GPS jamming attacks and missile launches, adding that they agreed to meet promptly to discuss response measures.
Yoon said Seoul is making efforts from every angle to minimize economic losses from increased tariffs and other policies that the incoming Trump administration may introduce.
He said he will first need to meet with Trump to determine how best to respond to the new U.S. administration’s policy priorities.
