President Yoon Suk Yeol and the leaders of four other nations have adopted a joint statement calling for all UN members to comply with the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions amid concerns about deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
The leaders of the MIKTA group — South Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, Türkiye and Australia — issued the joint press statement after a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.
In the joint statement, the MIKTA leaders confirmed their commitment to cooperation on sustainable development, global peace and security, and global governance.
The statement said that at a time of multiple crises and geopolitical confrontation, the MIKTA leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to a safe, peaceful, just, equal, inclusive, sustainable and prosperous world for all, calling on all UN member states to uphold the UN Charter and UN resolutions, including those adopted by the Security Council.
Yoon’s office said the MIKTA leaders stressed their support for and commitment to the UN resolutions amid growing concerns about illicit military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
