A public opinion poll released Thursday shows broad support for the court's recent decision to hand down a suspended prison sentence to Democratic Party(DP) leader Lee Jae-myung for violating the Public Official Election Act.
According to the National Barometer Survey(NBS) conducted by Embrain Public, KSTAT Research, Korea Research and Hankook Research on one-thousand-two adults across the nation from Monday to Wednesday, 49 percent of respondents said its was an "appropriate ruling," while 41 percent disagreed with the decision.
The survey also showed that among supporters of the ruling People Power Party(PPP), 89 percent agreed with the court's judgement, while 77 percent of DP supporters believed it was wrong.
By region, the traditional conservative strongholds of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province had the highest number of respondents who agreed with the court at 67 percent.
The survey had a response rate of 16-point-seven percent with a margin of error of plus or minus three-point-one percentage points and a 95 percent confidence level.
