Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly said Thursday that Russia struck Ukraine with a new intermediate-range ballistic missile(IRBM), not an intercontinental ballistic missile(ICBM).
According to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency and other media, Putin said in a televised address that the strike was a test of a new weapon and he ordered the attack in response to Ukraine firing longer-range weapons supplied by the U.S. and Britain to hit targets inside Russia.
Putin reportedly said Russia used one of its newest IRBM systems in the attack on Ukraine, adding that it was a ballistic missile with nonnuclear hypersonic equipment.
Calling the test successful, Putin said the missiles travel at a speed of Mach ten, or two-point-five to three kilometers per second.
He said modern air defense systems around the world, including U.S. missile defense systems, cannot intercept such missiles.
Putin then said Russia reserves the right to strike at countries that provide weapons to Ukraine for attacks on Russian territory.
Ukraine’s military earlier said that Russia had launched an ICBM targeting the Dnipro region in Ukraine.
