The defense ministry convened a meeting of key commanders Tuesday, ordering the entire military force to stay on emergency guard.

The ministry also called on the military to reinforce its readiness posture.

The news came as President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law during a televised address to the nation late Tuesday night.

Yoon stressed the need to eradicate pro-North Korea forces and uphold the constitutional order.
