The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU), one of the nation’s two umbrella labor unions, has announced plans to stage an indefinite strike until President Yoon Suk Yeol steps down.
At a press conference Wednesday, the KCTU said it intends to fight alongside the South Korean people for Yoon’s immediate resignation.
The labor group said the strike will facilitate an end to an era of inequality and polarization, and will serve as the starting point for a new era of respect for labor.
While the strike was approved by the union’s central executive committee, the collective action requires separate deliberation by each industrial union.
The umbrella union also held a rally near Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on Wednesday morning, calling for social reform and sovereignty for the people.
The group later gathered again at Gwanghwamun Square in the evening for a candlelight vigil to oust the president and hold him accountable for declaring martial law and reversing it overnight.
