The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) submitted a motion seeking to impeach Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is believed to have advised President Yoon Suk Yeol to declare emergency martial law.

In a message to local reporters on Wednesday, the main opposition said the motion was submitted to the National Assembly at 5:45 p.m.

Earlier, the DP filed a motion to impeach the president, and added they also plan to seek the removal of the defense minister and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min over the declaration and lifting of martial law, and to file complaints accusing them of treason.

The motion against the defense minister, as well as the already tabled impeachment motion against the president, are expected to be reported to the first plenary session to be held after 12:00 a.m. Thursday.

The motions are set to be put to a vote either on Friday or Saturday.

The impeachment would be approved with support from at least two-thirds of the 300-member Assembly.
