Ruling People Power Party(PPP) Chairman Han Dong-hoon said he will strive to prevent the National Assembly from passing a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The ruling party leader made the remarks Thursday at the party’s Supreme Council meeting at the Assembly, two days after Yoon’s botched martial law move.
Han said he will strive to ensure that the motion does not pass in parliament because the president’s impeachment would cause chaos, harming the people and the party’s supporters.
But the PPP chair stressed that he was not defending the president’s unconstitutional martial law decree, and he repeated his earlier calls for the president to leave the party.
Han said when he met with Yoon at the presidential office on Wednesday afternoon, the president said he was forced to declare martial law due to the reckless acts of the main opposition Democratic Party.
Han said the president’s perception of the situation was vastly different from his own and that of the people, making it difficult for Han to empathize with Yoon.
