The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) has decided to push for a vote to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday in a plenary parliamentary session.

After the party’s Supreme Council meeting on Thursday, DP spokesperson Jo Seoung-lae told reporters the motion will be put to a vote at around 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The motion, proposed by 190 opposition party lawmakers and one independent lawmaker, was reported to a plenary session at 12:48 a.m. Thursday.

The vote must be held by 12:48 a.m. Sunday, as the law stipulates that a vote must occur between 24 hours and 72 hours after a motion is reported to the plenary session.

A two-thirds majority is required to pass the motion, which would need support from at least eight lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party.

In proposing the motion to parliament, opposition lawmakers said that in declaring martial law, Yoon violated the Constitution and other laws concerning the principles of popular sovereignty and the separation of powers.

They also said his martial law decree infringed on freedom of expression, as it put all media and publishing outlets under the control of the martial law command and banned strikes and protests.
