Main opposition Democratic Party(DP) leader Lee Jae-myung has reiterated calls to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol for what he called an attempt to gain absolute power by declaring martial law earlier this week.

During a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly on Thursday, the DP chief said Yoon sought to control all constitutional and state institutions and that his actions amounted to a coup.

Lee also said a number of the president’s critics had been targets of arrest, suggesting that personal grievances and anger were the true motives behind the martial law decree.

The opposition leader called on People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon to back the impeachment motion, saying he has a responsibility as the ruling party leader not to condone treasonous acts.
