Army Chief of Staff Park An-su, who was named martial law commander upon President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration late Tuesday, said he had offered to resign to then Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on Wednesday after martial law was lifted.

At a session of the National Assembly's Defense Committee on Thursday, Park said he understood the ministry to have reviewed his resignation.

The Army chief said he believes that military servicepeople's love for their country and the people remain unchanged and that they continue to serve on the front lines to protect national security with sincerity.

Park also said he had informed Police Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho about the martial law decree via the former minister's mobile phone upon his orders.

The Army chief said he had requested an increase in deployment of the police force, while stressing that taser guns and blanks must not be used due to public safety.
