The prosecution has set up a special investigative unit to look into treason allegations in connection with President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of emergency martial law late Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Friday that the envisioned unit will be headed by the chief of the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office, Park Se-hyun, with the size of the unit as yet undetermined.

The prosecution formed a special investigative unit in 2016 to look into the influence-peddling scandal involving former President Park Geun-hye and her confidant Choi Seo-won, formerly known as Choi Soon-sil.

At the time, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office mobilized around 30 prosecutors, a record number for such a unit.

Prosecutors have apparently decided to set up the new unit after assessing that the martial law incident was as serious as the influence-peddling scandal.
