National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik says another martial law declaration is inconceivable and unacceptable, stressing that Tuesday night proved that South Korea’s democracy cannot be destroyed with guns and swords.
Woo made the remark in an emergency statement released on Friday at the National Assembly with regard to rumors that President Yoon Suk Yeol may declare martial law for a second time.
Woo said if the president makes the misjudgment of declaring martial law again, he and all lawmakers will block the effort with all their might. He pledged to do whatever it takes to defend parliament and protect the people and democracy.
Woo said he hopes all civil employees will faithfully defend the Constitution from where they are and called on the military and police to not leave their ranks stipulated by the Constitution.
Woo said he hopes the military and police will defend their honor as citizens in uniforms by not following unjust orders that go against the Constitution.
The speaker then urged the public to have faith in the National Assembly and watch related developments in a calm manner before reiterating that the National Assembly will defend the people and democracy at the forefront.
