President Yoon Suk Yeol and ruling People Power Party Chief Han Dong-hoon have failed to narrow their differences ahead of a plenary vote on Yoon impeachment scheduled for Saturday.
The two on Friday held talks after Han said in the morning that the president should be suspended from his duties.
Attending a plenary session of PPP lawmakers following his meeting with Yoon, the ruling party chief said that the president did not make any indications of a decision that can possibly change his call for Yoon's suspension.
Han said that he asked the president to address the situation but Yoon doesn't seem to believe now is the right time.
Earlier on Friday, Han withdrew his decision to protect Yoon in the upcoming impeachment session, claiming he obtained information that the president, after declaring emergency martial law Tuesday night, sought to arrest politicians who were his opponents.
Among the politicians Yoon allegedly wanted to round up is Han and key opposition figures including DP Chair Lee Jae-myung.
