Ruling People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon says it is inevitable for President Yoon Suk Yeol to leave office early, as it has become impossible for the president to carry on his official duties after the martial law debacle.
Speaking to reporters after Yoon’s televised apology on Saturday, Han said the ruling party and the government will consult closely on economic issues and other matters to prevent human suffering and the worsening of situations abroad.
In his address to the nation, Yoon said he planned to entrust the ruling party with decisions on how to stabilize state affairs, including whether he serves out the remainder of his five-year term in office.
Main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung expressed great disappointment over Yoon’s address, saying the president’s remarks were out of touch with public opinion and would only further anger the people.
Calling for Yoon’s immediate resignation or his impeachment, the opposition chief pledged to actively push for the president’s swift removal, accusing him of treason and of endangering the nation.
