Ruling People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon says President Yoon Suk Yeol’s early departure from office is inevitable.
Speaking to reporters after Yoon’s televised apology on Saturday, the ruling party chief argued that it has become impossible for the president to carry out his official duties after the martial law debacle.
Han’s stance differs from the consensus of the ruling People Power Party, whose lawmakers agreed Friday night to oppose Yoon’s impeachment in the vote scheduled for Saturday.
Han said the ruling party and the government will consult closely on economic issues and other matters to circumvent the public's distress.
In his address to the nation, Yoon said he planned to entrust the ruling party with decisions on how to stabilize state affairs, including whether he serves out the remainder of his five-year term in office.
Analysts agree that Han’s influence over the ruling party is limited in the face of a pro-Yoon faction that may still prove loyal to the president.
