Main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung has expressed great disappointment with President Yoon Suk Yeol’s address to the nation, saying there are no viable options except Yoon’s immediate resignation or his impeachment.

During a press conference after Yoon’s speech on Saturday, Lee said the president’s remarks were out of touch with public opinion and would only anger the people further.

The opposition party chief pledged to actively push for the president’s swift removal, accusing him of treason and of endangering the nation.

On the possibility of the impeachment motion not passing the National Assembly on Saturday, Lee said he will push repeatedly until Yoon is impeached. 

Lee said if ruling party lawmakers oppose the motion, it will practically make them co-conspirators.

A two-thirds majority is required for the motion to pass, meaning it would need support from at least eight ruling party members.
