The National Assembly is set to vote on Saturday on an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his abrupt declaration of martial law.
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik announced Saturday morning that the plenary session is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Democratic Party and five minor opposition parties had submitted a motion seeking Yoon’s impeachment, accusing the president of violating the Constitution and other laws.
The motion requires a two-thirds majority to pass and needs support from at least eight lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party.
If the motion succeeds, the Constitutional Court will determine whether Yoon remains in office.
Should the court uphold the impeachment, Yoon would become South Korea’s second president to be removed from office, following Park Geun-hye in 2017.
Ahead of the impeachment vote, the National Assembly will also revisit a bill to launch a special counsel investigation targeting first lady Kim Keon-hee, who faces allegations concerning stock manipulation and interfering in party candidate nominations.
The bill, which Yoon vetoed for the third time, will require a two-thirds majority to override the veto.
