The damage from the heavy snow that struck Seoul and southern Gyeonggi Province late last month is expected to be the most costly in the past 20 years.
According to the interior ministry on Saturday, municipal field inspections have been extended until Friday to assess the damage in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province and the Chungcheong provinces from the snow that fell between November 26 and 28.
Significant snow damage was reported in Incheon; Eumseong County, North Chungcheong Province; Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province; and five cities in Gyeonggi Province.
The worst year for snow damage in the 21st century was 2004, when the amount totaled 673-point-four billion won, or around 473 million U.S. dollars.
The following year saw 520-point-six billion won worth of snow damage.
Local governments have reportedly estimated last month’s snow damage at tens of billions of won as of Friday, surpassing costs from a storm in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, in 2010 that came to 38 billion won.
