Massive rallies were held in front of the National Assembly and in the Gwanghwamun area on Saturday, as lawmakers convened a plenary session to vote on a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
As of 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the unofficial estimate by the police, approximately 102-thousand people and possibly as many as 159-thousand gathered in Yeouido, while organizers, including the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, claimed a turnout of one million.
After lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party(PPP) walked out of a plenary session refusing to vote, citizens who support the impeachment are surrounding the gates of the National Assembly after rumors that PPP lawmakers might exit through a back door.
Networking traffic in the area surrounding the National Assembly experienced a brief slowdown.
The disruptions were attributed to reduced signal strength caused by the high concentration of people in the area.
Meanwhile, conservative groups held a counter-protest earlier in Gwanghwamun. As of 6 p.m., an unofficial estimate by the police reported about 18-thousand people with a maximum of 20-thousand gathered in the Gwanghwamun area, while organizers claimed an attendance of one million.
