Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, who is believed to have played a role in President Yoon Suk Yeol’s botched martial law move last week, has resigned.

In an official statement on Sunday, Lee expressed his intent to step down and apologized to the people, saying he acknowledged responsibility for failing to assist the president adequately.

He continued that there should not be any more gaps or confusion in state affairs and that he will return to life as an ordinary citizen and dedicate himself to supporting progress in the country.

Lee’s resignation came a day after the main opposition Democratic Party submitted a motion to impeach him, accusing him of plotting the martial law plan.

The ministry said Yoon accepted Lee’s resignation shortly after he offered it.
