Competition is heating up as the prosecution, the police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials(CIO) vie for the lead role in investigating last week’s martial law incident.

Out of concern that their cases could overlap, the prosecution proposed a joint investigation with the police, but the police turned the offer down.

The CIO asked the police and the prosecution to hand over their cases to the agency, citing the Act on the Establishment and Operation of the CIO.

So far, prosecutors have arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and are expediting investigations into top military officials, including Army Chief of Staff Park An-su, who was named martial law commander when President Yoon Suk Yeol gave the order last Tuesday.

Police, meanwhile, have seized the former defense minister’s mobile phone and laptop after raiding his residence and office.
