Motions to impeach justice minister Park Sung-jae and Korean National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho were reported to a plenary session of the National Assembly on Tuesday.
The main opposition Democratic Party proposed the motions to hold Park and Cho accountable for last week’s martial law incident.
The party said Park failed to actively block the declaration of martial law or cite its unconstitutionality even though he was in a position to know that declaring martial law could be regarded as an act of treason.
On Cho, the party said the commissioner general abused his power to command police forces when blocking passage into and out of the National Assembly during the martial law incident, accusing Cho of obstructing the parliament from exercising its right to request that martial law be lifted.
The Democratic Party is planning to put the motions to a vote on Thursday, as the law stipulates that a vote must occur between 24 hours and 72 hours after a motion is reported to the plenary session.
