The National Assembly has passed a resolution calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s immediate arrest over the December 3 martial law declaration, along with seven others alleged to have played roles.

The motion passed Tuesday’s plenary session with support from 191 of the 288 lawmakers in attendance and opposition from 94, while three abstained.

The others named in the bill are former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, former interior minister Lee Sang-min, former martial law commander Park An-su, Defense Counterintelligence Commander Yeo In-hyung, Capital Defense Commander Lee Jin-woo, Special Warfare Commander Kwak Jong-geun and Police Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho.

The resolution, which the opposition unilaterally pushed through the Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee on Thursday, initially did not mention the president but only named the other seven.

The main opposition Democratic Party submitted a revision at Tuesday’s plenary session adding the president’s name, accusing him of seeking to undermine the Constitution by overthrowing parliament or obstructing the exercise of its powers.

The resolution is not legally binding on investigative authorities.
