The prosecution, the police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials(CIO) are discussing the possibility of forming a joint task force related to last week’s martial law situation.

According to legal sources on Tuesday, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office sent an official letter on Monday to the CIO and the Korean National Police Agency’s National Office of Investigation(NIO), proposing joint consultations.

Currently the president, military leadership and top police officials are under separate investigations by the agencies on suspicion of treason, leading to concerns that the overlapping roles of multiple agencies could cause confusion.

With the NIO and the CIO agreeing to the joint investigation, it’s expected that the three agencies will soon hold talks about the formation of a task force.

The police argue that since treason is under their jurisdiction, the NIO should lead the joint task force.
