A local court has issued a pretrial detention warrant for former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, a key figure in President Yoon Suk Yeol’s surprise martial law move last week.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the warrant Tuesday night for Kim, whom prosecutors suspect of abusing his power and playing a significant role in acts of treason.

Granting the warrant, the court said it considered the degree to which the charges are supported, the gravity of the crime and the risk of the suspect destroying evidence.

Kim is the first person to be formally arrested over the martial law debacle.

The prosecution requested the warrant Monday, saying it suspects Kim of conspiring with President Yoon and others to incite an insurrection with the intent of undermining the Constitution.
