The ruling People Power Party(PPP) on Thursday elected five-term lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong as its new floor leader.
In an election held at the National Assembly, 106 out of 108 party members took part in the vote.
Kweon received 72 votes, defeating four-term lawmaker Kim Tae-ho, who received 34 votes.
Kweon, a former prosecutor, is considered a core member of the pro-Yoon Suk Yeol faction that helped the president enter politics and win election in 2022.
During his victory speech, Kweon vowed to confront the party’s crisis, adding that he will resign as floor leader once everything is resolved.
He said although the consensus among PPP lawmakers is to oppose the impeachment of President Yoon, he vowed to hold a meeting to discuss whether to change the party’s stance.
Having served briefly as the party’s floor leader at the start of the Yoon administration, Kweon pledged to use his experience to gather the wisdom of his fellow lawmakers and ensure that the party overcomes its issues.
