The National Assembly has passed an opposition-led bill that mandates the appointment of a special prosecutor to look into whether President Yoon Suk Yeol broke the law in issuing his December 3 martial law decree.
The bill was passed in a 195-86 vote with two abstentions during a plenary session on Thursday.
The motion specifies President Yoon as the target of the probe, and suspicions that he unlawfully and and unconstitutionally issued the decree, without meeting the necessary requirement that warranted martial law, and that he neutralized the National Assembly of its power over the martial law, and for seeking to illegally arrest the Assembly speaker, lawmakers, politicians and reporters.
The Parliament also passed a special counsel bill mandating an investigation into allegations surrounding first lady Kim Keon-hee after 195 lawmakers voted in favor of the bill and 85 against.
Meanwhile, motions to impeach justice minister Park Sung-jae and Korean National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho also passed.
