The newly elected ruling People Power Party(PPP) floor leader, Kweon Seong-dong, met with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik on Friday and suggested starting discussions on constitutional amendments.
Kweon told reporters that he requested Woo take the lead in initiating constitutional amendment talks.
Within the ruling party, one of the proposals for resolving the political crisis caused by President Yoon Suk Yeol's emergency martial law declaration is to consider a constitutional revision to shorten the president's single, five-year term by potentially adopting a four-year, two term presidency.
Kweon also argued that currently, the National Assembly's schedule is being set based on the "unilateral demands" of the main opposition Democratic Party(DP) and called on Woo to also listen to the ruling party's arguments and ensure fair parliamentary proceedings.
Park Tae-seo, the chief press secretary of the National Assembly speaker, clarified that the talks between Kweon and Woo were not about shortening the presidential term, but rather a general conversation about the possibility of discussing constitutional amendments.
