A second motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol has been reported to a plenary session of the National Assembly after the first motion failed to pass parliament last week.
The motion, proposed by 190 opposition lawmakers and one independent lawmaker, was reported at around 2 p.m. Friday.
As in the first motion, the second stated that in declaring martial law, Yoon violated the Constitution and other laws concerning the principles of popular sovereignty and the separation of powers.
The latest bill also highlighted that the fact martial law troops and police attempted to arrest lawmakers under Yoon’s command serves as reason to oust Yoon.
It also stated that martial law troops occupied the National Election Commission, seized the mobile phones of commission employees, and also sought to seal off a polling company established by veteran broadcaster Kim Ou-joon, all of which serve as additional reasons to impeach the president.
The opposition camp plans to vote on the motion at 4 p.m. Saturday during a plenary session, as the law stipulates a vote must occur between 24 hours and 72 hours after a motion is reported to a plenary session.
