The secretary general of the National Election Commission(NEC) said Friday no evidence was found of rigged elections, refuting claims made by President Yoon Suk Yeol the previous day.
Kim Yong-bin made the remarks before the parliamentary interior and safety committee during an emergency inquiry on Yoon’ short-lived martial law decree.
Kim said statements made by Yoon during his televised address to the nation on Thursday were incomprehensible. In that address, Yoon said he ordered former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun to inspect the NEC’s computer system when he declared martial law last Tuesday.
Yoon claimed that a limited inspection by the spy agency found serious security issues in the organization’s computer system, which made it difficult for the people to trust election results since the NEC handles elections.
Kim also dismissed Yoon’s claim that there was a hacking attack by North Korea against South Korea’s constitutional institutions and government agencies, including the NEC.
The secretary general then refuted Yoon’s statement that it is virtually impossible to conduct a warrant-based raid on the NEC given that it is a constitutional organization.
Kim added that the NEC is legally complying with all raids and has no reason to refuse them.
