Police Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho appeared in court on Friday for a hearing to review a warrant for his pretrial detention for his alleged role in the December 3 martial law incident.
Cho, who had been detained at the Seoul Namdaemun Police Station without a warrant, arrived at the Seoul Central District Court in handcuffs at around 2:22 p.m.
After the hearing, which lasted around two hours, Cho silently left the court and ignored reporters questions.
Cho's lawyer said he had argued that his client cannot be established as an accomplice in the insurrection case based on precedent, stressing that the police chief had allowed entry to parliament and refused orders under martial law.
Earlier, a team investigating the martial law incident at the National Office of Investigation(NOI) under the police filed a request to detain Cho and Kim Bong-sik, the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, on treason charges.
As Kim decided not to attend the court hearing, a review of his warrant only lasted some ten minutes, based on documents.
The court is expected to decide on both Cho and Kim's warrants late Friday.
