Ruling People Power Party(PPP) floor leader Kweon Seong-dong said his party is likely to maintain its official position to vote not to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his martial law order.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a plenary vote on the opposition-led impeachment motion set for 4 p.m. Saturday, Kweon said the ruling party plans to discuss its official position and its lawmakers’ participation in the vote until around 3:50 p.m.
But he added that it is unlikely the party’s current position will change.
Last Saturday, 105 out of 108 PPP representatives boycotted a plenary vote on the opposition’s previous impeachment motion, resulting in the motion’s failure when attendance fell short of the quorum of two-thirds of the 300-member parliament.
The ruling party convened a closed-door assembly of its representatives at 10 a.m. Saturday, and talks are still underway in the presence of party chief Han Dong-hoon and the floor leader.
Kweon is said to have proposed that PPP lawmakers take part in Saturday’s impeachment vote, and most of the party’s lawmakers are said to have agreed.
