National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik said the public’s passion, courage and devotion to democracy resulted in the parliamentary passage of a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Speaking after the opposition-led motion was approved in a plenary vote on Saturday, Woo said the Constitutional Court is expected to decide whether to uphold the president’s impeachment in accordance with constitutional procedures.
Pledging to accelerate a process to fill three vacancies on the nine-seat Constitutional Court bench, the speaker said parliament intends to cooperate with the government to stabilize the public’s economic well-being and to ease anxiety at home and abroad over the economy, diplomacy and defense.
Woo urged public officials to continue to fulfill their duties as the Assembly makes every effort to restore the nation’s international credit standing and the public’s economic well-being.
The speaker thanked the public, emphasizing that the future of the country and hope lie within the people.
