The main opposition Democratic Party says the success of the parliamentary motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over the martial law incident is a victory for the South Korean people and for democracy.
In a statement issued after the motion’s passage in a plenary session Saturday, party floor leader Park Chan-dae said democracy prevailed thanks to the people, who cried out to protect democracy and constitutional governance in front of the National Assembly.
The floor leader stressed, however, that the crisis stemming from what he called the December 3 insurrection has yet to end, calling for thorough investigations and punishment for the president and others alleged to have played roles.
Park pledged all-out efforts to launch a special prosecutor investigation and to ensure that the Constitutional Court upholds the president’s impeachment.
The floor leader called on the court to proceed swiftly with the impeachment trial and to reach a decision that aligns with the Constitution.
Park promised the South Korean people that the main opposition party will ease public concerns and resolve difficulties in their daily lives, while giving them hope for the future.
