The leadership of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) is falling apart after the National Assembly passed a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived martial law declaration on December 3.

After the vote on Saturday afternoon, five Supreme Council members of the PPP – Kim Min-jeon, Ihn Yo-han, Jang Dong-hyeok, Jin Jong-oh and Kim Jae-won – all expressed their intent to resign to take responsibility for the passage.

The party's constitution stipulates that if at least four of the council members resign, the leadership is dissolved and the party needs to form an emergency response committee system.

PPP Chairman Han Dong-hoon, however, has yet to express his intent to step down.

If Han refuses to resign, the party is to see a fierce confrontation between lawmakers supporting Han and President Yoon.
