Ruling People Power Party(PPP) Chairman Han Dong-hoon has resigned amid deepening conflicts within the party after the National Assembly passed a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived martial law declaration on December 3.
The PPP chair announced his decision to step down at the National Assembly on Monday, apologizing to the people for their suffering from Yoon’s martial law declaration.
Han said it had become impossible for him to perform the duties of party leader due to the collapse of the Supreme Council.
All five members of the party’s Supreme Council expressed their intent to resign after Yoon’s impeachment vote on Saturday.
The party's constitution stipulates that if at least four of the council members resign, the leadership is dissolved and the party needs to form an interim leadership committee.
Han said that he made every effort to find a better path for the country other than Yoon’s impeachment, but failed to do so, for which he is to blame.
Han’s resignation comes 146 days after he was elected the party chair in the PPP national convention on July 23.
