Main opposition Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae says President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment trial should proceed under a nine-member Constitutional Court.
In a meeting of the party’s floor leadership on Tuesday, Park stressed that the court should have nine justices on its panel, not the current six, to ensure fairness and eliminate unnecessary disputes.
The court has only six justices at the moment, as three justices have retired and their successors have yet to be appointed.
The floor leader added that the Democratic Party will make efforts to swiftly appoint three justices.
Park also criticized ruling People Power Party floor leader and acting Chairman Kweon Seong-dong for claiming that acting President Han Duck-soo cannot appoint a Constitutional Court judge unless the Constitutional Court first upholds Yoon’s impeachment.
Kweon made the claim earlier on Tuesday, saying the acting president can appoint judges in the event of a presidential vacancy, but cannot do so during a presidential suspension.
