The South Korean government has imposed independent sanctions on several North Korean generals who were allegedly deployed to Russia’s Kursk region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that it has sanctioned eleven individuals and 15 entities for violating multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
It said the individuals and entities placed under Seoul’s latest sanctions also facilitated illegal military cooperation between North Korea and Russia and the illicit procurement of funds and materials for Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.
Among the individuals newly subject to sanctions are four North Koreans: Kim Yong-bok, the deputy chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army; Sin Kum-chol, the director of its operations bureau; Ri Pong-chun, an army general who reportedly leads the Storm Corps deployed to Russia’s front lines; and Ri Song-jin, a missile developer alleged to have been sent to the battlefield near the Russia-Ukraine border.
The list also includes Russian individuals and companies alleged to have provided supplies and financial support for the North Korea-Russia arms trade.
The announcement came after South Korea and nine other countries, including the U.S. and Japan, as well as the European Union issued a joint statement condemning the deepening military cooperation between the North and Russia.
The U.S. and the European Union also issued new sanctions against North Korean individuals and entities on Monday local time.
